Small file sizes make the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) files most suitable for on-screen applications such as PowerPoint presentations and e-newsletters. They are compatible with most desktop publishing applications, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. However, because of the “noise” that can surround printed JPEG files, the TIFF brands generally will be a better choice for documents that are going to be printed on a desktop printer.

The JPEGs are low-resolution files and will be clear when viewed on screen but will appear somewhat chunky when printed on a desktop printer. As raster images, the JPEGs will lose image quality the more they are scaled over 100%. JPEGs can be used by both PC and Macintosh computers.
