The fall color this year at Natural Bridge has been a little out of the ordinary. The typical peak of fall color is in late October, but… this year it looks like the first week of November might be peak for the season. The color began to change in early October and then we had a week of 80 degree temperatures that seemed to stall everything. From that point, some leaves have changed as usual, some have turned brown and dropped, and others are staying green much longer. If we can avoid hard rains and winds in the next week or so, we may still get to enjoy some nice fall color this year.
Right now, the ridgetops are showing the best color with reds dominating the show in the red maples, sourwoods, and scarlet oaks. The hickories are just beginning to turn yellow on the hillsides and the sugar maples are producing some nice orange colors lower in the valleys.
Come out on Friday, November 1, 2013 and enjoy a Seafood Buffet ( 4:00pm – 8:00 pm) along with a free musical performance by Dave Stahl and Freddy Helm from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Hemlock Lodge. Freddy’s “Boots Randolph” style on the saxophone along with Dave’s “Floyd Cramer/Jerry Lee Lewis style on the keyboard is a crowd pleaser, with varied musical styles ranging from country to pop, from gospel to blues, and even music from the big band era.
